12 o'clock And there's the chime! With the sweet night air Bringing spring to the eve As the city sleeps fair In its peaceful dream There amidst towers of the old skyline There I found, the smell of time. As a mind wandered on -
On a silent beach Sat a grain past prime After all its tumbles With the watery shore And all its crumbles Calming feet once sore. Like a bed that's earthly yet divine There followed me, the smell of time.
Once in a forest Deep, dark and dole The leaves unmoving And silence its soul; Walking with barks Past the age of their prime I heard my solemn beating heart And smelt the solemn smell of time.
